If periodontal disease is detected early, treatment can help prevent the loss of bone or loss of teeth. Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth.  Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva.  If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar).  When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone.  If decay is detected early, a small filling may be needed instead of a large filling. A filling is used to repair a tooth that is affected by decay, cracks, fractures, etc.  The decayed or affected portion of the tooth will be removed and then filled with a composite filling or amalgam filling.  You and your dentist can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth.
